Cape Cod Rail Trail Bike Rentals
You can rent a bike right on the Cape Cod Rail Trail in Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster and Orleans. Several shops sit beside the trail with their own parking, so you can pick up a bike and ride straight off. Most rent regular bikes, e-bikes, kids' bikes and trailers. Book ahead in July and August, except at shops that are first come, first served.
DCR, which runs the trail, lists bike rentals as one of its facilities but doesn't run the shops. They're private businesses. The ones below describe themselves as being on the trail; we name them from their own websites and leave out prices, which change every season.
Rental Shops by Town
Bike Rentals in Brewster
Brewster has the most rental choices, which makes it the easiest place to start. It's also in the middle of the trail, so you can ride west toward Harwich or east through Nickerson State Park to Orleans.
- Rail Trail Bike & Kayak, 302 Underpass Road, Brewster (508-896-8200). E-bikes, pedal bikes, kids' trailers and tandems, plus kayaks and paddleboards. The shop says it connects directly to the trail and has parking.
- On The Trail E-Bike Rentals, 2624 Main Street, Brewster (774-408-0849). E-bikes and electric trikes, with toddler and pet trailers at this location. The shop advertises direct trail access.
- Dennis Cycle Center also lists a Brewster location on the trail.
Bike Rentals in Orleans
Orleans Cycle, at 26 Main Street, says it has been on the rail trail since 1991. It rents on a first-come, first-served basis, and asks people not to e-mail to reserve. Its e-bike renters must be 21. The shop keeps seasonal hours and posts them on its site; in late summer 2026 it was closed Sundays through Tuesdays, so check before you go. Orleans is a good start for riding north to Eastham and Wellfleet.
Bike Rentals in Dennis and Yarmouth
Dennis Cycle Center in South Dennis does sales, rentals and repairs. It lists two locations on the trail, Dennis and Brewster, and a delivery service that brings rental bikes to Chatham, Harwich, Dennis, Yarmouth and Brewster for rentals of more than a day.
Rail Trail Bike & Kayak's second shop is at 20 Forsythe Avenue in Yarmouth, near the trail's western end (508-258-0932).
Bike Rentals in Harwich and Chatham
On The Trail E-Bike Rentals has a second location at 1 Old Colony Way in Harwich (774-534-1821). Harwich is where the Old Colony Rail Trail leaves the main trail for Chatham, so a Harwich rental covers both. Chatham searchers can also use Dennis Cycle Center's delivery, which lists Chatham.
Eastham and Wellfleet
We haven't confirmed a rental shop in Eastham or Wellfleet from a shop's own website, so none is listed here yet. Riders staying on the Outer Cape usually rent in Orleans and ride north. From Orleans to the LeCount Hollow trailhead in Wellfleet is roughly 9 to 10 miles; see distances by town.
Renting an E-Bike
Rail Trail Bike & Kayak, On The Trail and Orleans Cycle all say they rent e-bikes; ask Dennis Cycle Center directly. Their rules differ. Orleans Cycle requires e-bike riders to be 21. On The Trail rents to riders 16 to 18 only with a parent or guardian. Ask about age, ID and a short how-to before you leave the shop.
DCR's page doesn't spell out an e-bike rule for the rail trail, but the 15 mph speed limit applies to everyone. If you plan to ride the National Seashore trails, the Park Service allows e-bikes under 750 watts with working pedals, but not riding on the motor alone. Rules for each trail are on our rules page.
What to Ask Before You Rent
- Is a helmet included? Massachusetts requires helmets for riders 16 and under, and DCR recommends them for everyone.
- Can I park at the shop all day? Several shops say they have parking, which saves a trailhead lot.
- Do you deliver? Dennis Cycle Center lists delivery; ask others.
- Do you have a lock, trailer, child seat or tag-along bike?
- What happens with a flat tire on the trail?
Bringing Your Own Bike
If you bring your own, every DCR trailhead lot is free except Nickerson State Park. The list is on our parking page. The trail is paved and mostly flat, so any bike in good repair works.
